Widnes opened their season with an excellent away victory against very strong opposition who carried the ball aggressively and were willing to open the play up using their three quarters.
The Widnes coaches were more than pleased with their team's performance especially with the ten players from last year's under 16's who all contributed to the victory.
The Wids had to withstand early pressure excellent defence from Callum Isbell, Bradley Davies, Si Bissett, Jack McAdam and Sean McMuldroch kept the Widnes line intact.
Widnes broke out of defence Paul Cunningham jinked his way on a 50 yard break, the Wids recycled the ball quickly but excellent cover defence from Crewe denied Elliot Condron.
Widnes had two more chances to go over the line Andrew Preston was tackled into touch by the corner flag, Captain Tom Beech was then denied inches short of the try line.
Widnes did manage to get over the line eventually Sean McMuldroch pouncing on a loose Crewe pass to touch down. Crewe then levelled the score scoring a well worked try.
On the stroke of half time big George Galligan powered his way over from short range, Beech added the conversion to leave the Wids 12-5 up.
Widnes started the second half brightly scrum half Josh Kenyon in the thick of the action along with Alex Cooke and brother Geoff. Galligan went over for his second try of the game from a 5 yard line out, Beech added a superb conversion from wide out.
Crewe responded with 2 tries one from 75 yards to leave the game in the balance at 19 - 19.
With 8 minutes remaining Captain Tom Beech sent out a wonderful pass to Mike Jones to race under the posts from 35 yards, Beech added the simple conversion.
In the final few minutes Widnes had to withstand pressure but great defence from Elliott Dennett, Josh Steadman and Aaron Duggan denied the home side. Man of the match was awarded to Sean McMuldroch closely followed by Joe Galloway and Sheldon Johnson.
The Heath Road youngsters welcome Winnington Park to the Wids on Sunday 2.00pm kick off.
