Ossett Albion 1-3 Runcorn Linnets
8:10am Monday 2nd September 2013 in Sport
RUNCORN picked up a second win of their FA Cup campaign in a 3-1 Preliminary Round triumph away at Yorkshire side Ossett Albion.
The dominant Linnets opened the scoring on 10 minutes when a neat set-up led to Gavin Salmon volleying home from Chris Lomax's cross.
And after a period of sustained pressure, the visitors doubled their lead midway through the half when Antony Hickey followed up his own saved shot to dribble past the 'keeper and tuck the ball home for a 2-0 lead over the Evo-Stik League side.
And things got worse for Ossett when Henry Owen received a red card as Runcorn continued to defy their underdogs tag, keeping the Wakefield side on the back foot. Despite further chances arising, Linnets did have to settle for a 2-0 half-time lead however. The second half continued in similar vein with Linnets dominating the possession and chances. Matty Atherton came on for his 150th club appearance and substitute Ross McDowell whose first act saw him shoot over the bar.
However, as the match drew towards its close the hosts suddenly got a goal back from nowhere. After a shot had rebound off the bar, Adam Muller headed into the Runcorn net, and Ossett were briefly back into it.
But any worries were eased when Mark Houghton scored from close range in the final kick of the match to seal a deserved victory for the Linnets.
