Broughton Park Colts 24 Widnes Colts 12

Widnes bowed out of the League Cup at the first hurdle going down to a very strong Manchester side who dominated the set piece denying Widnes ball.

Broughton Park raced into a 12-0 lead after only 15 minutes. Widnes got back into the game 5 minutes before the break Tom Beech picking up a loose ball to race 40 yards, Beech added the conversion for a 12-7 deficit at half time.

Broughton Park extended their lead with two well taken tries. Widnes did have their moments, Luke Nelson going close on two occasions. Mike Jones also went close after a strong run, Liam Quinn who had a fine game at full back was also well tackled after an excellent weaving run.

With 7 minutes remaining neat inter-passing between Josh Kenyon and Aaron Duggan resulted in Duggan scoring wide out. Special mention must go to Captain Geoff Cooke who did a fine job playing out of position at prop forward.

New recruits Joe Ellison and Dylan Bennett worked hard in defence.

Mike Jones for the second week running was awarded the man of the match. Widnes turn their attention to the Lancashire Cup on Sunday when Southport visit Heath Road in the quarter final 2pm kick off.
