WIDNES produced a superb all round team performance to topple previous unbeaten Collegiate to close the gap to just one game at the top of table.
The Wids victory was built on excellent defence, Mike Jones, Alex Clare and Craig Farmer in the back row tackled everything that came their way.
Centres Olly Glover and Sean McMuldroch time and time again forced errors in the Collegiate back line with aggressive tackling along with Tom Beech at stand off. The Wids took the lead after only 7 minutes, Beech slicing open the Collegiate defence to race under the posts from 35 yards, Beech added the simple conversion.
Half back partners Tom Beech and Josh Kenyon used the strong wind to pin Collegiate into their own half for long periods Aaron Duggan, Patrick Tyrrell and Adam Watson were willing ball carriers in the Widnes pack that dominated the first half.
10 minutes from the break Widnes extended their lead McMuldroch racing over from 40 yards after good work from Liam Lawton and Luke Nelson, Beech added his second conversion to leave the Wids 14 points to the good.
The second half saw Widnes pinned down in their own half as Collegiate threw everything at them but could not penetrate the aggressive Widnes tackling. Jack Butterworth, Glover and McMuldorch pulled off try saving tackles.
The Wids only chance of the second half saw Beech make a break from his own 22 reaching the half way line kicking ahead for the supporting Lawton but unfortunately the kick went into touch 5 yards short of the Collegiate line. Collegiate finished the game attacking the Widnes line opting to run a number of penalty kicks but once again the Heath Road youngsters ence held firm.
The Leecliffe Hotel man of the match was awarded to Sean McMuldroch for his excellent work in defence on a day where any one of the Widnes players could have picked up the award.
