Stunning Wids victory
1:07pm Thursday 25th October 2012 in Sport
Altrincham Kersal 12 Widnes 18
MUCH had been written about Kersal’s outstanding performance in knocking unbeaten rivals Sale off their perch and the question was could they back it up against Wids.
And the answer from Widnes was an emphatic ‘no’ as the visitors out-enthused their South Cheshire opponents in their own back yard.
Kersal just about edged the first half to lead 12-5, with two tries and a conversion to a lone Paul O’Connor try for the visitors.
But what a second-half performance from the Widnes pack, led from the front by the youthful enthusiasm of Liam Wilde, Mike Garrity, Jonny Lowe and Jon Hetherington.
The visitors squared things up on 44 minutes when O’Connor swept in for his second try converted by Kevin Leadbetter before the winger showed nerves of steel to slot over a couple of well-struck penalties to wrap up the victory.
Bolton Colts 7 Widnes Colts 36
WIDNES Rugby Club’s senior colts produced their best performance of the season so far in their win at Bolton.
The visitors took the lead inside five minutes, Josh Kenyon breaking from a scrum and handing on to man-of-the-match Liam Lawton who fed powerful wing man Luke Nelson to charge over. Tom Beech landed the difficult conversion.
Widnes extended their lead when Beech threw a long ball out to Shaun McMuldroch, who raced 35 yards offloading to the supporting Olly Glover to touch down.
Widnes started the second half strongly and were rewarded with a try from Lawton. Beech added his second goal followed by a 35 yard penalty.
Bolton got a well deserved try but Alex Clare was next on the score sheet, touching down after outpacing the home defence and Beech landed his third conversion.
On the stroke of full time Beech made a half break inside his own half, offloaded to the supporting Lawton who outpaced the Bolton full back to score the try of the game.
