Hens set to become visitor attraction at monastic site

A YOUNG cockerel who strolled into Norton Priory has now found a new home inside the ruins of the ancient monastery.

Staff have adopted the Pekin Bantam, a breed of miniature chicken, and plan to build a coop to introduce him to some friendly hens.

Learning and community manager Allison Kirk said: “Who knows, by Easter we could have baby chicks.”

The birds will be kept at home with one of the rangers until the coop is ready.

Visitors and school parties will be able to interact and feed the hens.

Pekin Bantams are very docile and with careful and regular handling, they are happy to sit on owner’s laps and be stroked and petted.

World readers are invited to suggest names for the new hens on the Norton Priory facebook page.

this is a lovely idea but please, please, please make sure they are securely fenced in for their own protection, preferably in a roofed run and not just made with chicken wire (which foxes can bite thru) but with proper weldmesh.
