More delays expected as weekend closures continue on Runcorn Widnes Bridge

MOTORISTS can expect further delays as maintenance work continues on the Silver Jubilee Bridge.

From Tuesday, November 6 there will be overnight closures and all traffic will be prevented from crossing the bridge for up to 30 minutes on the hour between 10pm and 5.30am.

A signed diversion route will be provided, although due to the diversion route being 16 miles it may be quicker to wait for the bridge to reopen. Advance warning signs will be erected on site.

There will also be weekend and overnight from 7pm to 6am, which will involve the closure of two lanes on the bridge with single lanes running in each direction.

In addition it will be necessary to close the following slip roads:

  • Off slip from Weston Point Expressway to the bridge – Closed most weekends and overnight
  • Slip road from the bridge to Weston Point Expressway (Trumpet Loop)
  • Slip road from the Bridge to Bridgewater Expressway (town viaduct)

Only one of the last two closures will be implemented at any time.

Suitably signed alternative routes will be provided. In addition for traffic travelling from M56 junction 12 Clifton will be signed via Central and Bridgewater Expressway.

A council spokesman said: “The maintenance work being undertaken is essential to ensure the integrity of the bridge and traffic disruption, particularly at weekends, is likely.

“Halton Council apologises for any inconvenience this may cause.”
