Fun-filled experiments bring chemistry to life

EXCITING explosions and bubbling vessels brought chemistry to life for budding young scientists.

Catalyst in Widnes was invited to host interactive workshops to give primary school pupils an insight into the world of science.

The Royal Society of Chemistry’s Liverpool section received a £1,000 grant to promote chemistry and asked the West Bank science discovery centre to host the event.

Around 250 pupils and teachers from nine Halton schools enjoyed fun-filled demonstrations.

Phil Day, Catalyst education manager, said: “It was amazing to get the opportunity to enthuse so many children at once about the world of chemistry.

“The children’s faces said it all. I am sure that the gasps of wonder and the smiles and laughter will live long in their memories.

“And who knows, maybe we will have sown a little seed of inspiration in one of our future chemists.”

Len Pollock, of the LSC, said: “Like the children I found it all very entertaining and thoroughly enjoyed the show.”

Pupils from St Clements, Beechwood, St Augustine’s, Hillview, Woodside, Lunts Heath, Simms Cross, St Gerard’s, and West Bank took part.
