A ROBBER brandishing a machete threatened staff to open a Runcorn shop minutes after it had closed, police revealed today.

Two masked men forced employees to let them into the Spar store in Palacefields.

One of the offenders stole cash and cigarettes whilst his accomplice stood by the door.

DC Tina Jackson said: "Fortunately, no-one was injured in the incident but the member of staff was left extremely shaken by the ordeal.

“We are keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident or was in the area at the time and has seen anything significant, which could assist with our enquiries to come forward.

"We want to reassure local people that we take any incidents of this nature extremely seriously and will do all we can to trace those responsible and ensure they are brought to justice."

The robbery happened at around 8.10pm on Wednesday, October 10.

Detectives today appealed for witnesses.

The first man, who had the machete, is described as white, about 5ft 8ins tall, and of medium build. He was wearing a black balaclava, grey jacket, grey hooded top, blue trousers and black trainers.

The second man is described as having a slim build and was wearing dark clothing and a balaclava.

A 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident. He has been bailed pending further enquiries.
