WIDNES pupils discovered the diversity of languages spoken all over the world through a series of special activities.

Wade Deacon pupils celebrated European Day of Languages by giving their timetable a foreign twist.

They focussed on celebrities like Leonardo De Caprio who are multi lingual.

Teams tested their knowledge of other countries’ cultures.

An orienteering task challenged pupils to find different words for ‘hello’ hidden around the school.

International dishes were served at lunchtime and pupils discussed various topics in French and Mandarin, learnt in an after school club.

Year eight pupil, Jasmine Johnson, said: ‘I was really surprised to learn that there are over six thousand languages spoken in the world and that three quarters of the world’s population do not speak English.”

Steven Cummins, foundation leader of modern foreign languages, said: “It is wonderful to see so many pupils recognise what a useful skill language learning is and dispel the myth that everyone in the world can speak English.”
