HUNDREDS of adults have conquered their fear of water, thanks to a community swimming club.

Stroke victims and people who have had heart attacks have mastered breast stroke, and improved their health and fitness.

Halton Disabled and Adult Learner Swimmers Club was launched six years ago, at Chesnut Lodge School in Green Lane, Widnes.

It started with one class and now has seven.

Founder Roy Radley, aged 68, of Factory Lane, said: “Our aim is to get people of out of their homes and give them confidence.

“I know from experience how beneficial it is. I had a stroke and learnt to swim. My specialist couldn’t believe I was the same person when he saw me.

“I feel so lucky.”

Roy has raised more than £11,500 from grants and business donations to keep costs down.

Members pay a one-off subscription of £5, £4 insurance, and £3.25 for an hour’s tuition.

Eileen Campbell is the swimming instructor, first aider and treasurer.

Eileen, aged 57, from Cronton, a coach for 19 years, and is a lifeguard at Kingsway Leisure Centre.

She said: “This club is absolutely wonderful. I am the greatest ambassador for it.

“There is nothing better than non weight bearing exercise. Lots of people with new knee joints, strokes and high blood pressure have benefitted. We have a hydro pool so it’s lovely and warm.

“The wellbeing feeling they get is great. It keeps them fit and away from illness. I know how much joy I get out of swimming so I love teaching.

“It’s so enjoyable because you meet such wonderful people.”

Sessions run from 4pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

If there is enough demand, an evening class will begin on Thursdays.
