MYSTERIOUS puddles in the road are now being investigated at night by a crack team of United Utilities leak busters.
Kevin Ward, aged 45, from Runcorn, is the latest recruit learning how to use the latest technology to detect where the water is coming from.
He uses various electronic devices and acoustic listening sticks to pick up the quiet sound of trickling water.
Kevin said:”You certainly need good ears for this job and a lot of patience.
“Many leaks stay underground so we have to go out listening for them. You need it to be really quiet on the roads which is why we work at night.”
The team uses data from meters on miles of pipework beneath our roads to look for tell-tale signs of a drop in pressure that could indicate a leak.
Trickles can turn into major bursts so if you see a leak on a road or pavement call the free leak line on 0800 330033.
