Halton residents warned to lock sheds and garages

SHEDS and garages have become the latest target for thieves, warn police.

Bikes, power tools, motorbikes and mini-motos are among items which have been taken from gardens across Widnes.

PCSO Steven Hill said: "We are urging residents to remain vigilant and to reassess their current security measures.

“Many thefts such as this are opportunistic. If a thief sees a door that looks insecure, they are more likely to try to break in.

"We are committed to tackling this type of crime but we need the continued support of residents.

“ Reassessing your current security measures can help to reduce your chances of being targeted by thieves.

"Keeping an eye out on your neighbourhood and reporting any suspicious activity is also important. Even the smallest amount of information can be useful when piecing together a case.

"We would urge anyone who has any information in relation to any of the recent thefts to get in touch with us."

Residents are advised to keep garages, sheds and outbuildings locked at all times with a good quality padlock or other security device. If possible anchor any large items, such as ladders and bikes to the ground or roof.

Use marking systems which show that the items belong to you.

If any items are stolen and recovered it will be easier for them to be identified.

Sensor lights which automatically switch on if anyone is outside are also recommended.

Do not leave wheelie bins next to fences or gates as this could provide an easy access route into your garden.

Anyone with information can call Cheshire Police on 101.

If anyone wants their their bike or other valuable items security marked they can contact PCSO Hill on 0845 458 6383.
