EXCITING plans to regenerate Runcorn have been unveiled.

New shops, restaurants, apartments and leisure facilties could transform the old town into a vibrant urban canalside attraction.

Halton Council has teamed up with international real estate advisor, Savills, to launch Runcorn Prospectus to attract developers, investors, occupiers and landowners.

Artchitects and designers will be invited to enter a competition to illustrate their ideas and commitment.

The former 6.3 acre Crosville site, off Bridgewater Expressway, opposite The Brindley, is the first council owned area to be promoted.

Council leader Clr Rob Polhill said: “We’re enthusiastically marketing this site because we believe it’s got great potential.

“We’ve already had a couple of enquiries.

“The uniqueness of the Bridgewater Canal and accessibility make it a really desirable asset.

“My frustration is that people don’t know know about it. It is a hidden gem.”

Phase one of the vision includes two other sites, a restoration opportunity of the Grade II Listed 1906 library in Egerton Street and commercial development of the town centre bus station, Direct Link building and car park.

Barry Allen, development director of Savills, said: “This is an exciting document that highlights a number of sustainable and achievable regeneration and renewal opportunities which will revitalise Runcorn.

“There is strong potential to transform the traditional centre and put it on the map for inward investment and development.”

Clr Polhill added: “It took us a long time to develop the Homebase site which now has Dreams, Starbucks and a petrol station.

“We have been constantly talking to developers. We’ve got an open mind, we don’t want to tie anybody’s hands.

“Runcorn has a lot to offer and needs to be a destination.

“The waterways are a tremendous feature.

“We are confident this vision has plenty of potential.

“Once the first developer comes on board, the rest will follow.”

Now there’s a surprise, Councillor Polhill spouting rubbish.

How many times do we have to listen to Widnes politicians telling the good people of Runcorn that Runcorn Old Town is going to be regenerated.

These statements must have been spouted for at least the last 12+ years. “Swear I have just seen a flying pig”
