LOGISTICS giant Stobart has pledged a three-year sponsorship deal worth up to £2.5 million a year to support rugby’s Super League.
A convoy of Eddie Stobart trucks brandishing the new sponsorship livery will drive from Widnes to Old Trafford today to launch the the Stobart Super League.
The first televised game of the new season will be broadcast at Stobart Stadium on Friday when Widnes Vikings play Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.
Stobarts, which already sponsors Widnes, has not paid any cash to secure the naming rights but will instead freely advertise the game on their 2,250 famous trucks.
Nigel Wood, RFL chief executive, told a news conference at Stobart’s training centre in Widnes that nine of the 14 clubs voted for the deal, which he described as “too good to turn down”.
Andrew Tinkler, Stobart chief executive officer, said: “As a major local employer, we’ve had positive results from our investment in the Stobart Stadium which was a unique opportunity for us to support the wider community.
“This partnership is a great opportunity for us to help promote Super League.”
