Ice rink will open in Widnes, vows Halton Council

HALTON Council has vowed to open an ice rink at Widnes Waterfront despite claims that the chosen operator, Planet Ice, is facing legal action over unpaid taxes.

Council leader, Clr Rob Polhill said: “We are meeting shortly with representatives of Planet Ice to understand their trading position on how this impacts on their proposals to fit out and operate the rink.

“It should have opened in January. We have been chasing them. It has been frustrating.

“We are committed to deliver an ice rink. We are confident it is going to happen.”

Chief executive David Parr said they would look for another operator if Planet Ice pulls out.

The Arena Group which operates Planet Ice was unavailable for comment.

What do you think?

Do you want to see an ice rink in Widnes or would you prefer something else?

Of course it has to be an Ice Rink. I am extremely excited about the prospect of an Ice Rink opening so close to me, I have been a huge fan of Ice skating since I saw an Ice Hockey game when visiting family in Essex, ever since I have skated as often as possible but it's hard living in the Liverpool area, the best we get is a temporary rink every Christmas. Which is always very busy which shows that clearly there is a market for an Ice Rink. Also shows like Dancing on Ice are making Ice Skating even more popular around the UK

Ice Skating is something that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and it's not just public skating that would be a source of income there's also a variety of classes it could bring, you just have to look at the list of classes run at Deeside Ice Rink to see how successful it has the potential to be.

Plus it's a chance to bring a new sports to Merseyside, Ice Hockey, Curling and Figure Skating.

I for one really can't wait and have even bought my first pair of Skates ready to get onto the rink as soon as it opens, so really hope it goes ahead.

The ice rink has been long awaited by a lot of people, to lose it now would be a travesty. I used to skate at Silver Blades rink in liverpool many years ago. My children and all there friends have waited for this for years after listening to manystories from me. We have to travel so far at the moment, we can only go once in a blue moon. This rink means they will be able to go a few times a week and take themselves, which they cant do at the moment because of the mileage and the amount of people who want to go . So many people keep asking me when it is opening I keep scouring the net for any word, I have even driven down a few times to see if it has opened. So please, please hurry up and find someone to open it. If it is any use I have been to a few Silver Blade ice rinks over the years and find them very good, clean, safe, well fitted out and very friendly.

It was just yesterday we turned up to 'The Hive Leisure park.' Since we heard all these opportunities were opening we had to go! As a family we could not decide what to do so we went to check everything out and see what we liked most. We got there we saw everything in motion except for one building which was blank! I figured it had to be the Ice rink place so we took a look through the glass windows and there was nothing but concrete floor with a dip in the middle. We thought it wasn't built yet then to be told by a local that the company 'Planet Ice' had pulled out last minute and we were appalled! Runcorn & Widnes don't have much entertainment sites we have to travel further out for rare things like Ice skating but knowing it was going to be a 20 - 30 minute bus journey was great! I am shocked that its not yet open, i just hope one day it will be opened because id make the effort to go ice skating often as its round the corner and usually fairly cheap. As a teenager it gives me and others something to do. Even after a painful fall on the ice last year at Deeside i want this Ice Rink so bad!!
