A PHENOMENAL £11,640 was collected on a Christmas float by Widnes Rotary Club, making it an all time record.

Local groups and organisations are now invited to bid for grants.

Mike Aldridge, chairman of the community and vocational committee, said: “We would like to say a massive thank you to all the people of Widnes for being so generous.

“This is a huge amount and a record since we’ve been doing it.

“All of this money will go back into our local community helping local groups and organisations to improve the lives of less fortunate people.”

More than 260 volunteers helped collect donations over 10 nights and three weekends.

Mike, aged 52, owner of Widnes family jewellers, said: “We are looking to recruit enthusiastic men and women.

“Our members come from a cross section of our community, from builders, engineers and banking to chemists, the police and property.

“We have tremendous fun and enjoyment putting a little back into society.”

The club meets every Monday at 7pm at the Hillcrest Hotel.

Applications for grants can be made to Mike Aldridge, Widnes Rotary Club, c/o Hillcrest Hotel, Cronton Lane, Widnes WA8 9AR.
