AN armed robber brandishing a handgun burst into a Runcorn off licence and terrorised shop assistants.

He demanded cash from two female members of staff at Bargain Booze in Grangeway, Runcorn.

They handed over money and he stole a packet of cigarettes before leaving, and heading towards the Co-operative store.

He had been standing outside the parade of shops for more than an hour, waiting until no customers were in the shop.

Detectives have released this CCTV still of the suspect in the hope that someone will recognise him.

Police have only released details of this robbery which happened at 9.30pm, on Friday, September 16.

DC Mark Naylor, said: “This man was hanging around for a long time before going into the shop and I am keen to speak to anyone that may have seen him.

“Fortunately, the two women working in the shop were not injured but they were understandably left extremely shaken.”

Local shops are being warned to be vigilant and are being given crime prevention advice.

Retailers are warning shopkeepers not to approach the suspect if he turns up again, but to call the police.

The offender is described as white, of proportionate build, with a shaved, possibly balding head.

He was wearing a distinctive black waterproof jacket with grey and white pockets, tracksuit bottoms and was aged in his late 20s or 30s.
