BURGLARS are targeting elderly residents with new fangled con tricks, warn Cheshire Police.

A spate of distraction burglaries have been reported across Halton and neighbouring areas.

Callous intruders have duped their way into the homes of vulnerable people using all sorts of fictious stories.

One elderly lady had a significant amount of cash stolen after a man told her he had lost his puppy and asked to search for it in her back garden.

DI Sharon Case, said: “I urge residents to be vigilant in respect of this type of crime as the methods the thieves use are becoming increasingly unusual and diverse.

“A lot of people are aware of those who may attempt to gain access to their homes by purporting to be officials from a utility company or offering to carry out gardening work.

“However, this method of distracting a victim by pretending to search for a pet is an unusual approach that encourages innocent homeowners to feel sympath for the situation and fall prey to this type of burglary.”

She warns residents to be vigilant and always ask for identification from unexpected callers.

People are asked to keep an eye on their elderly and vulnerable neighbours.
