WIDNES Market is in the top 10 - and that’s official.

Results published by the National Association of British Market Authorities show that the town’s market beat competition from hundreds of entries to be among the best in the country.

Clr Tom McInerney, board member for markets, said: “Widnes is a vibrant market with friendly and helpful traders.

“The market has a lot going for it and despite the economic situation, has been doing really well with incentives, like competitions, Santa’s Grotto and free prize draws to entice customers in.

“The council has always believed that Widnes Market is a valuable community asset, part of the town’s personality.”

Results were based on on-line voting by the public and other market stakeholders.

Widnes Market, established in 1875, is moving with the times and now has its own facebook site.

Its new image has given it a makeover with bright, colourful banners, coupled with quirky advertising .

It relocated to Green Oaks in 1995 and has 185 stalls inside and 85 outside.
