A GIFTED Downs Syndrome gymnast has been selected to promote the Special Olympics all over the world.

Omar Haddad, aged 22, of Downside Widnes, who will join 7,500 competitors in Athens in June, 2011, has made an interactive film to champion the games.

Karen Wallin, chief executive of Special Olympics GB, said: “We fell in love with Omar.

“It is his happy-go-lucky personality.

“He has captured the exhilaration of our athletes, the film is wonderful.

“We don’t get any government or lottery funding. Each athlete has to raise £2,000.

“We hope people will now join Omar’s journey.”

Omar started gymnastics when he was eight and travels 200 miles a week, to train at The Cheshire Academy of Integrated Sport and Arts in Crewe.

His coach, Iain Chalmers, said: “Omar is a wonderful athlete to train. He is keen and enthusiastic and will always put in that extra effort.

“The decision to feature him in a special promotional video is testament to his abilities.

“There is a fantastic shot of Omar giving a beaming smile when he completes his routine. That sums up the joy and happiness that sport can give to individuals with disabilities.

“The film is both inspirational and life affirming. I could think of no better disability gymnast who could project these ideals.”

Omar’s mum, Liz, aged 52, said: “Omar puts his heart into everything he does.

“He has exceeded all our expectations.

“His utter strength is amazing.

“The filming in Wembley lasted 13 hours yet he never complained.

“It was breathtaking watching him perform.”
