A GIFTED disabilty gymnast has been selected to compete in the World Special Olympic Games in Athens, set to become the largest sporting event in 2011.

Omar Haddad, aged 22, of Downside, Widnes, now a member of the Special Olympics GB squad, will join 7,500 competitors taking part in 24 sports.

His coach, Iain Chalmers, said: “Omar has tread a long path to be considered for selection.

“He had to compete regionally and then nationally.

“His name had to be put forward to a special UK wide selection panel where another set of criteria were examined, namely his ability to integrate with the rest of the team and his ambassadorial qualities.

“I am pleased to say that the panel has no doubts about selecting Omar.

Award-winning Omar excels in three sports, artistic gymnastics, sports acrobatics and team gym.

He will be demonstrating his abilities on gymnastics rings, high bar, parallel bar, pommels, vault and floor.

Mr Chalmers, added: “Omar always puts 100 per cent effort into his training.

“I have utter confidence in his ability to take on the best in the world.”

Omar trains twice a week at the Cheshire Academy of Integrated Sport and Arts in Crewe.

His mum, Liz, said: “Omar has been involved in gymnastics from the age of six and has developed into a strong, confident lad.

“He is working incredibly hard.

“Omar receives no form of sports governing body funding of any kind and will have to pay well over £2,000 to compete in Athens.

“It is a myth to think that youngsters who represent their country are well funded.”
