TRAINEE hairdressers and beauty therapists are going head to head in a challenging contest.

Level three Riverside College students have set up rival businesses - ‘Jagged Edge’ versus ‘Skin And Tonic’ - to put their enterprising skills to the test.

Beauty therapy student Tricia Speakman, aged 35, of the Town Hall estate, Runcorn, said: “It’s teaching us how to run our own business.

“We have to do our own accounts and run to schedule.

“I came back to college after having two children. It gives you a new lease of life and boosts your confidence.”

The salons’ final session is on Monday from 1.30pm to 4.30pm.

Sylvia Oldfield, aged 35, of Brookvale, Runcorn and her daughter, Stephanie, aged 18, are both training to become hairdressers.

“I’d like to open my own salon with my daughter.

“I really enjoy cutting.

“Running this business challenge is an eye opener. You learn a lot.”

April McCaslin, aged 19, of Halton View, Widnes, said: “It teaches you lessons.

“You get a real feel for business.”
