DREAMS of creating costumes for London’s West End have come a step closer for an ambitious young designer.
Riverside College student Helen Lawson, aged 20, has won a place at Paul McCartney’s prestigious Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts.
Helen, of Windmill Hill, Runcorn, said: “The interview was very hard.
“I cried afterwards because I thought I had messed up.
“When I received the letter saying I had a place, I couldn’t believe it.”
Helen is about to complete her BTEC in national diploma in fashion and clothing.
She said: “I love the course.
“Not only does it prepare you for higher educatiion, but you get to put your own personality into your designs.”
Helen had to write a review on a performance piece project at her LIPA interview.
She chose The Convict’s Opera, which she had seen at the Liverpool Playhouse.
She had produce a portfolio of her work and a sketch book, showing different samples and textures.
Helen starts her BA honours degree in theatre and performance design in September.
Maxine Mealey, curriculum manager for visual and performing arts, said: “We are incredibly proud of Helen.
“She is a dynamic visionary and securing a place at LIPA is testament to her hard work and commitment.
“Helen’s garments will be modelled on the catwalk as part of our fabulous end of year fashion show.”
Everyone is welcome to the fashion show in May.
Open evenings are being held tomorrow, from 5.30pm to 8.30pm at Riverside College campuses in Runcorn, Kingsway and Cronton.
