A FULL-SIZE model steam engine will be the key attraction of a new £200,000 railway themed play area opening at Easter.

Play carriages, swings and a climbing frame are being created beside the miniature railway in Runcorn’s Town Park.

A second platform will be built taking passengers to new destinations along the track, including picnic areas, climbing boulders and a timber agility trail.

Clr Phil Harris, board member for parks, said: “It is vital that children and young people have a chance to play.

“It helps to build confidence and develop imagination but, above all, play is fun and allows young people a level of freedom and independence that is important for their growth.”

This is one of 20 play areas that have been refurbished or built from scratch across Halton, over three years, with funding from the Government’s Play Builder programme.
