Thomas Rigby, 79, receives good neighbour award


A PENSIONER has been honoured for helping his elderly neighbours with their shopping and odd jobs.

Thomas Rigby, aged 79, of Rossall Road, Widnes, was the overall winner in Halton Housing Trust’s Good Neighbour Awards.

Thomas said: “I was made up when I found out I had won.

“I love doing charity work and I always try and do what I can to help people.”

He supports his elderly neighbours by running errands, paying their rent and helpng with repairs.

Nick Atkin, trust chief executive, said: “The awards are our way of recognising and celebrating those people who are contributing to their community.”

Jackie Peck, of Widnes, won the Community Award for setting up youth projects and residents’ groups.

Ryan Jackson, aged 17, of Runcorn, received the Youth Award for reducing anti-social behaviour amongst young people.

Alan Young, from Hale, and Alan Davey, from Widnes, shared the Taking A Stand Award for their commitment to improving the safety of their neighbourhoods.

Mr Atkin added: “Our winners should all be applauded for the time and effort they commit.

“Whether it’s setting up community groups, supporting youth projects or helping to prevent anti-social behaviour, they have all had a big impact on their neighbourhoods.”

Winners were treated to a day out to watch Widnes Vikings’ 22-20 victory over Barrow at the Stobart Stadium.

Vikings forward Dave Allen and the club’s chief executive Alex Bonney presented winners with their awards and £250.

Mr Bonney said: “All the winners should be proud of their commitment to helping the communities in which they live.”
