COUNCILLOR Tony McDermott is standing down as leader of the council and leader of Halton’s Labour party.
As he approaches his 70th birthday, he says it is time to let someone else take over.
Clr McDermott, of Liverpool Road, Widnes, said: “It is quite an energetic job.
“There are people who are more energetic and younger, with ideas of their own.
“I’ve had 11 years, it’s been a privilege but now its somebody else’s turn.”
Clr McDermott, who will continue to represent Broadheath, is proud of his record.
He said: “I’ve been lucky enough to achieve a huge amount of what I set out to do.
“Regeneration is the hallmark of the last 11 years.
“Victoria Square was a disgrace. The old Town Hall was empty and leaking, the old technical school was empty and the Co-op was inhabited by pigeons.”
A £10 million project created a new library, learning centre, bars and restored buildings.
“The idea of Marks and Spencer, Next and British Home Stores appearing in Halton is quite a step forward,” he added.
“The leisure development, including an ice rink and bowling alley is certain to go ahead.
“We’ve had The Brindley built. Daresbury was a blink away from disappearing. Now, it is the second most important scientific base in the country.
“We’re getting to grips with Castlefields.
“If there is any disappointment, it’s that we didn’t get a decision on the bridge.
“I’m certain it is going to happen.
“I think Halton is a better place now than it was 10 years ago.”
His successor will be chosen in a secret ballot on May 9.
Nominations close next month.
