A POLICE officer trying to stop a teenage man from jumping off the bridge has ended up in hospital himself.
As he attempted the rescue the distressed 19-year-old, the officer fell through some temporary construction boarding and broke his ankle.
The incident happened just before midnight last night when a passer-by raised the alarm.
Officers were quickly at the scene and discovered a distraught teenager, threatening to harm himself.
Police intervened to restrain the man for his own safety and in doing so, one officer hurt his ankle.
The 19-year-old local man received no injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.
The police officer, who is based in Widnes, was treated at Warrington Hospital.
The incident was reported to the Health and Safety Executive.
