Lynne Day, 41, honoured for helping young diabetics

A MOTHER who has provided tireless service to help people with diabetes has been given a top award.

Lynne Day, aged 41, from Widnes, was a runner-up for the Diabetes UK Volunteer Achievement Awards for working with children and young people.

Her son Phil, aged 18, has Type1 diabetes and Lynne has been chairman of the Widnes and St Helens volunteer group for the charity for the past 11 years.

She works closely with Diabetes UK’s north west office to organise annual weekends away for families involved in the group and also supports the 14 parents groups in the region.

She also helps run family events and even spoke at a training day for schools to help improve support for pupils in the area.

Lynne said: “I’m so pleased to be a runner-up for this award. Volunteering for Diabetes UK is extremely satisfying and it gives me great pride to work closely with families in my region who are also affected by diabetes. It can be a real shock when your child is diagnosed with diabetes.

“Using my personal experience to help others through that difficult time and beyond is very important to me and that is why I will continue volunteering for years to come.

Helen Johnston, volunteer development officer at Diabetes UK, said: “We can’t thank Lynne enough for all her hard work.

“She has helped countless families come to terms with the effect diabetes can have on family life and empowered a generation of young people living with diabetes in the north west.

“Lynne thoroughly deserves this award for the huge difference she has made to so many lives.”
