Young man claims bright light followed him before beams were blasted downwards

A UFO spotted hovering over Widnes cemetery is one of hundreds of close encounters revealed by the Ministry of Defence this week.

The MoD and The National Archives released details of around 800 sightings recorded from 1981 to 1996.

A young man claims he was followed by a bright yellow light on his way home after a night out in Widnes at 2.30am on July 15, 1996.

In a log, police described the youngster as ‘a sensible sort of lad and genuine’.

He said he was crossing a footbridge from Avondale Drive into Upton when he saw a light “two houses high”.

It followed him when he tried to walk away.

He told poice it made a high-pitched noise “like cats wailing” before blasting light beams downwards.
