EXCITED children were thrilled to spray water and wear helmets in Victoria Park, Widnes.

Behind the fun, there was a serious message as firefighters were telling families how to keep their youngsters safe.

Mark Cashin, deputy chief fire officer, said: “It’s important that parents talk to their chldren about fire safety and set a good example to help them stay safe together.

“Explaining the importance of having a smoke alarm and testing it weekly can significantly reduce the devastating consequences of having an accidental house fire.”

Pupils from St Bede’s and Faifield Junior schools took part in a several activities as part of child safety week.
