Posting on social media, the MP said: “I was saddened and angered when the Wilko store closed at Runcorn Shopping City given the way Wilko’s owners mismanaged the company and the impact on the workforce.

“However, it’s good to learn that the empty unit has now been taken on by Poundstretcher with a grand opening at 10am on Saturday, December 23.

“New members of staff, both full and part-time, have been recruited from the local area to become part of the team.”

Mike Morrison, regional director of Poundstretcher, said: “We are pleased to be opening our store in Runcorn for everyone to access our wide range of offers and products.

“The team is working hard to deliver an outstanding shopping experience, great service and an enjoyable shopping environment for all our new customers.

“We are expecting a massive turnout for our opening day specials, including an action-packed morning, so come early to not miss out.”
