BREAST feeding is officially being welcomed at a supermarket.
Asda in Widnes became the first to scoop Halton's Baby Welcome Award, which rewards stored offering a welcome environment for breast-feeding mums.
Jennie Beechey, the Widnes Road store's events co-ordinator, said: "We are very proud to become the first to get this type of award.
"We are very much committed to being a store of the community and hopefully this award is keeping us close to that."
The award, organised by Halton Council and Halton and St Helens Primary Care Trust (PCT), sets strict criteria such as ample breast feeding and baby-changing facilities.
Dr Dympna Edwards, deputy director of public health for Halton and St Helens, said: "This award will mean that families know where babies are welcome in Halton.
"Parents will be able to go out knowing that there are places where mothers are welcome to feed their babies in some privacy. It is good for business and good for babies."
Successful stores will receive a certificate.
