NORTHWICH Town Council is in the running for a national accolade, after being recognised for its work over the past year.

The council has been nominated for the National Association of Local Councils’ ‘Council of the Year’ award, making a shortlist of just three authorities.

A public vote is open until October 12 to decide the winner, with voters told about the ‘forward-thinking’ council’s help in giving the town a ‘buzz’ through some of its recent projects.

The supporting statement for the nomination, which came from outside the council, pointed to changes including the paddling pool, community fun weekend and play area improvements.

It said: “Northwich Town Council has become a forward-thinking council over the past few years.

“The council have made a host of changes during the past five years and prides itself on the close working relationship between members and staff to get things done.

“They are at the forefront of planning the regeneration of the town with partners, and producing a packed programme of events throughout the year to encourage participation from the whole community to feel proud of their town.”

There is praise for councillors’ engagement with the public, and the close work between staff and members.

The Neighbourhood Plan process, monthly artisan market, music festival, Christmas lights switch-on and parkrun are also referenced.

The statement added: “It is noticeable that members of the public are commenting on how the town has changed over the past few years and that people are proud to live in Northwich.

“Although the national retail sector is struggling, the main High Street in Northwich is full of small independent businesses (many of whom have opened in the past year or so) adding to the vibrancy of the town centre.

“Northwich Town Council should be commended for their part in changing the town to become an example of regeneration in its borough council.”

Chris Shaw, Northwich Town Council clerk, said: “As a council we have done a lot of work over the past year.

“It’s been a massive team effort – the members, staff, officers and our partners have all worked tremendously hard to bring projects and events to life.

“It’s a nice surprise for the team’s hard work to be recognised in this way.”

The winner of NALC's Council of the Year will be announced at the Annual Conference on October 30.
