A PENSIONER stole £164 worth of baby clothes from Debenhams in Golden Square for his grandson.

79-year-old Brian Barrett appeared at Warrington Magistrates Court on Wednesday, September 19.

Nardeen Nemat, prosecuting, said: "At 3.40pm on February 10, Barrett was seen by a sales assistant in Debenhams putting seven Jasper Conran baby grows into a bag.

"He then left the store without paying for them and was confronted by a security guard."

Barrett, of Lochinvar Street, Liverpool, said, 'You got me' when he realised he had been caught.

Mark Level, defending, said: "It is clear Barrett has declining cognitive abilities but he understands the case against him.

"This was a rather unsophisticated crime, the items were for his grandson and were returned.

"Despite his lengthy record he has not committed any thefts in the past 43 years."

Barrett, who has 32 previous convictions for 58 offences was last before the court in 2011 for conspiracy to supply controlled drugs for which he received six years in prison .

The pensioner was conditionally discharged for six months and ordered to pay a £50 fine and a £20 victim surcharge.
