MEDIA makeup, beauty and nail students have swept the board at a national contest.

The Riverside College trainees won first, second and third 1st, 2nd and 3rd place at the prestigious WorldSkills UK competition semi-finals.

In themed categories including Arabian nights and musical decades, they were up against colleges from across the UK.

Emma Littler won first place in the media makeup fashion and photographic competition and Kelsey Horn was runner-up.

The pair were challenged to design makeup and hair and choose an outfit for their models to depict Arabian nights.

Along with the quality of their designs, they were also judged on their own appearance, hygiene standards and professionalism.

Destiny Fryer came second in the beauty therapy hands and face category and Emma Kelly gained a 3rd place.

Chloe Woolliscroft gained third place in the nails competition.

Media make up tutor Gill Collings said: “The girls were very confident and expertly demonstrated the skills that they have learnt throughout the year at college.

"Emma and Kelsey have worked very hard and have shown their creativity and passion for hair and makeup. They both were very professional and are a credit to Riverside College.

"Receiving first and second place results was a fantastic achievement for the two level two students who competed against level three students from other colleges.”

In the beauty competition, Destiny and Emma had to complete a number of treatments against the clock including eye cleansing, eyelash tinting, day makeup and application of red nail polish.

Beauty tutor Jill Welsh said:“I am delighted our beauty students were able to secure such great results in this prestigious competition. It really demonstrates the high skill level our students are able to perform at.”

In the nails competition, Chloe was challenged to with create a musical decades’themed design. She demonstrated techniques such as 3D nail art, colour fading, marbling and sculpting.

Nails tutor Kelly Barton said: “Over the past 12 months Chloe's confidence has grown and her skills have improved immensely.

"Competing in WorldSkills UK has not only enhanced her skills further but also enabled her to achieve the high standards which are required to progress into a position within a high class salon.

"Chloe is 100 per cent committed and an excellent role model to her peers, I wish her the best of luck in the competition finals.”

The students are now through to the finals which will take place at the NEC Birmingham in November.
