FIREFIGHTERS tackled a large grass fire in Widnes which was started deliberately.

Crews were called to Factory Lane in Widnes shortly after 7pm last night and discovered six separate seats of fire involving a total of approximately 100 square metres of grass.

Firefighters used beaters to put out the flames and were in attendance for around 40 minutes.

The seats of fire are believed to have been started deliberately.

Minutes earlier crews were called to a grass fire on Bishops Way in Widnes.

On arrival at land commonly known as The Bongs the crew discovered that the fire involved approximately 10 square metres of grass.

Firefighters used a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire.

At around 6.30pm, crews dealt with a fire in woodland behind Nortonwood Lane in Runcorn.

The crew used an extended hose reel jet to extinguish the fire.

Firefighters were in attendance for around an hour and 20 minutes.

There were several seats of fire at this location during the day.

Another grass fire was reported near to a cemetery on Holt Lane in Halton Village in Runcorn at 3.15pm.

Crews extinguished the fire with an extended hose reel jet and were in attendance for around 15 minutes.

At around 1.30pm firefighters were called to the M56 in Runcorn.

Crews discovered a small grass fire by the side of the westbound carriageway between junction 11 and 12.

Crews used a hose reel jet to put out the fire.

Another fire in a wooded area on Nortonwood Lane in Runcorn was reported at 1.15pm.

Firefighters used a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire.

A garden fire broke out on Boston Avenue in Runcorn shortly before 10.30am.

The fire was not in control so crews used a hose reel jet to put it out.
