A MARTIAL arts schoolgirl has won two medals in her first ever championship.

Meika Lewis, from Runcorn, won a gold and silver at the UKTC Taekwondo Champions League in Scotland on Sunday.

The nine-year-old has amazed her coaches after only taking up the sport a few months ago.

Proud mum Kerry Barlow, 29, from Hallwood Park, said: "She trains six days a week for an hour and absolutely loves it.

"This is her first competition. Her coach said she was amazing."

Meika, a pupil at Hallwood Park Primary School, attends a Taekwondo class at St John's Church on Greenway Road in Widnes every Thursday with Suzanne Rowles.

The keen athlete then goes to different classes in Great Sankey, Penketh and across Warrington with Phil Star every other evening.

Kerry added: "I am happy to take her training because it keeps her fit and helps her to work towards achieving things.

"She is dead bubbly."

Meika hopes to gain her yellow tag first grading on May 20.

Her sister Sinead, four, is following in her footsteps and has started training with Active Tigers.
