FOUR offenders tried to escape with a cash machine from outside St Helens Hospital on Friday night.

Detectives received reports at 11pm of the crime gang trying to remove the machine from the hospital on Marshalls Cross Road.

The attempt was unsuccessful and the offenders left on foot after a white transit van was stopped by police.

The gang then made off towards Marshalls Avenue on to Broadgate Avenue.

The offenders were all wearing black clothes with black bandanas featuring yellow and blue.

Police have appealed to anyone who saw a white BMW I Series at the time of the incident to get in touch.

Detective Inspector Cath Haggerty said: "I would appeal to anyone who may have seen people acting suspiciously in the area around Marshalls Cross Road on Friday evening, or a car matching the description of a white BMW 1 Series, to please come forward as any information no matter how small may prove vital to our investigation.

“Thankfully no one was hurt and no money was taken during this incident, nevertheless we are keen to find these offenders and put them before the courts."
