CHILDREN have been doing extra studies on Saturday mornings - while their friends play and watch TV.

Pupils from primary schools across Halton have been brushing up their English and maths in a pilot project.

The Grange School in Runcorn has opened its doors to give 10-year-olds a competitive edge when it comes to their year six Sats, the Government's national primary tests.

The Saturday Academy aims to make learning fun.

Joel Beavon, director of transition at The Grange, said: “The sessions are designed to stretch the abilities young people and get them thinking about maths and English in greater depth.

“They are more informal and the children can come in their own clothes. We concentrate on helping our learners apply their learning by giving them different, very challenging scenarios. We encourage them to work in teams to find the answers.”

More than 60 children from seven different primary schools tackled puzzles, problem solving and treasure hunts.

Maya Kelly, 10, from The Grange Primary, said: “It’s better than school! We don’t mind being here on a Saturday because it’s a lot of fun.

"I’m also learning to look at Maths and English in a different way and I’ve really enjoyed the learning experience. It’s really important for me to do well at school and get good grades in my tests so these sessions are ideal for me.”

Tyler Mowson added: “It’s a chance to be with some of your friends and to learn more about our subjects. It’s also good to be at The Grange which is a really big and exciting place. I am looking forward to the next session.”

Grange principal Janette Vincent said: “Both the learners and our staff have jumped at the chance to be part of this project.

"We believe in giving our young people the edge they need to succeed in an increasingly competitive world and for us this starts early.”

The final Saturday Academy takes place on May 12 from 10am to 12

The Grange plans to host special days during the May half term to help children prepare for their move from primary to secondary school.
