RUNCORN MP Mike Amesbury has challenged the Prime Minister in Parliament over the decision to bomb Syria without first consulting Parliament.
Sites near Damascus and Homs were hit on Saturday by the US, French and UK in response to the alleged chemical attack on Douma on April 7.
But in a move which goes against recent convention, Parliament was not consulted on the strikes, a move which has drawn criticism even from some on the Conservative benches.
Speaking during an emergency debate in the Commons today, the Weaver Vale MP said: “A decision of this magnitude required a parliamentary debate and vote. Will the Prime Minister commit to respecting that convention in the future?”
Theresa May replied: “Once again, I refer the honourable gentleman to the position that has been taken in relation to that convention, which is to accept that there are circumstances in which it is necessary for Government to be able to act without coming to Parliament first, but that when Government do so act, they should come to Parliament at the earliest opportunity to explain that action.”
