A RUNNER from Widnes is tackling the London Marathon to celebrate the life of his dad.

Alan Myler is already more than half way to smashing his target of £2,000 for North West Cancer Research.

The 37-year-old chose this charity because his dad Brian, 58, died from oesophageal cancer, which can be difficult to diagnose.

Widnes Vikings fan Brian, nephew of rugby legend Frank Myler, lost weight and his appetite but only went to the GP after started complaining about severe indigestion.

Alan wants to raise awareness and funds to help other people.

“I am inspired by my dad,” said Alan, of Haig Road, who works as a quality manager testing and certifying products.

“I picked this charity because it helps fund cancer research in this area. It leads the way in the fight against cancer where only world-class research will do.

“One in three of us will at one point in our lives be touched by cancer and it is our responsibility to ensure that we are doing all we can in the battle against cancer.”

After completing his first marathon in Blackpool last year, Alan is determined to improve his performance.

“I’m really excited,” said Alan, a member of Widnes Running Club, which has several runners in the capital’s big event.

“My family is coming down to support me and I’m sure the whole buzz of the big crowd on the day will push me along.”

To support the charity, Alan’s gym, Sweat Fitness on Tanhouse Lane, is running their first charity fitness challenge.

Fundraisers are invited to join a 5k run at 9.30am on Saturday, April 7 followed by a 45 minute boot camp session run by Paul Atkinson and Leigh Barber from the gym.

“Staff at this community gym are giving up their time and have bought medals,” said Alan.

The route follows the canal tow path on the Trans Pennine Trail.
