A DREAM vision to revive Runcorn by reopening locks on the Bridgewater Canal has been given an amazing new boost.

Engineers who carried out an extensive investigation say the project is not only feasible but will only cost a fraction of the feared cost.

The project could attract thousands of visitors, create many jobs and bring new restaurants, shops and businesses into the town.

Unlock Runcorn campaigner Graham Wallace said:“For years we have been trying to get people on board with the simple idea that if we can open up the locks again it will transform the town by bringing in loads of tourists.

"The problem with our plan is that up until now it has always seemed a bit pie in the sky because we thought it would cost over £20 million pounds.

“A new engineers' report has found that not only is reopening the locks a real possibility but doing so will only cost a fraction of what was first thought."

Detailed plans have now been drawn up.

Graham said: "The new flight would have a boat lift at the top, historically accurate locks in the middle and an incredibly rare incline railway at the bottom where boats would literally be put on a cradle and then lowered on a railway track to the Ship Canal.

"This would be an amazing experience for boaters and tourists who would come from all over the world to do and see it.

"The plans also include a 50 boat marina, another potentially large source of new income for Runcorn.

"Whilst it's still a lot of money to us normal folk in the the context of developments it is really doable.

"We just want everybody to get on board now and help us make this happen.”

Campaigner Noel Hutchinson added: "We love Runcorn. We've got something unique here that gives us huge potential to regenerate the town."

Halton Council leader Cllr Rob Polhill said: “This is great news and I am really pleased for the volunteers who have been committed to this for a long time and have worked very hard to try and make it happen.

“Opening up the locks and the regeneration opportunities that would come with it could help Runcorn become a major canal destination again and provide a wonderful leisure attraction for Halton residents and visitors to enjoy.”

Campaigners are now seeking grants and investors to fund the project.
