A HIGH tech firm in Runcorn is blazing a trail in the world of electric racing cars.

ABB in Daresbury specialises in a range of advanced digital tech used in advanced industries such as robotics and vehicle electrification.

The company has formed a partnership with FIA Formula E Championship, the world’s first fully electric international motorsport series, which serves as a competitive platform to test and develop e-mobility-relevant electrification and digitalisation technologies.

The company has also unveiled a robot called Yumi to work hand in hand with humans on a production line.

Yumi's advanced programming means it can be taught a process just by being physically guided through it by a person, eliminating the need for complex, time-consuming code-based instructions.

ABB employs 3,000 staff across the country and has its HQ at Daresbury Park.

Runcorn MP Mike Amesbury, who was shown around the site, said: “It was an absolutely fascinating tour and great to visit one of the real crown’s jewels of local industry.

“Not only are they pioneering technology but it’s technology that will hopefully one day benefit our environment.

“I’ve said all along I want to see green energy and high-tech jobs and this is really one of the crown jewels.”

ABB is also actively working with young people to develop their skills and interest in the tech sector.

The company sponsored the VEX Robotics competition for schools.

Ian Funnell, managing director ABB UK and Ireland, said: “I am very grateful to Mike for taking the time to come and learn more about ABB and what we do in the UK.

“We have a lot of common interests in supporting local energy intensive industries, increasing our industrial productivity and helping to develop the future skills which businesses will need. I look forward to working with Mike on some of these issues.”
