A WOMAN was cut free from a vehicle by firefighters in a three car collision on the M56 last night.

Three lanes on the westbound carriageway were closed for almost three hours, causing long delays.

The incident happened between junction 12 at Runcorn and junction 14.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: “Three women were taken to the Countess of Chester Hospital with minor injuries as a result of the crash.”

North West Ambulance Service sent a senior clinician, two rapid response vehicles and an ambulance to the scene.

Highways England said the incident caused delays of around 90 minutes to motorists’ journeys.

One lane re-opened at 8pm and traffic was allowed back on all three lanes 40 minutes later.

Firefighters were at the scene for two hours.
