A COURAGEOUS husband who lost his battle with cancer inspired his wife to have her head shaved.

Jeannette Brady lost her husband George in June 2014 after he was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus.

Her daring stunt has raised almost £4,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Jeannette, a member of the finance team at Riverside College and Cronton Sixth Form College lost her locks in front of hundreds of students and colleagues.

Jeanette said: “George was the most courageous man I have ever known.

“His strength and bravery was truly inspirational.

“He was the love of my life, my best friend and soulmate for 36 years.”

Widnes Viking player Gil Dudson came along to support her

Jeannette added: “During George’s illness there was a special Macmillan nurse who made a difference to our difficult journey.

“Her compassion, loving care and support helped us through the tough times as best she could.

“This is the reason I am braving the shave to support other families who are going through a similar experience.”

A day of fun-filled events was held to boost funds.

The annual great college bake off saw Riverside College’s version of the popular Channel 4 baking show with students and staff competing for the title of best baker.

Judges programme area leader for catering and hospitality Stephen Parkinson and catering tutor Maureen Nicholls were so impressed with the entries they could not decide an outright winner.

First place went to both Carol Walker, placement co-ordinator for early years and health and social care, and catering student Shania Machell, from Runcorn, for their equally outstanding bakes.

Both colleges raised a further £700 at a coffee morning with delicious cakes made by staff and students.
