HOUSING workers teamed up to take part in the English Half Marathon and 10k event and raised £2,205 for a children’s charity.

Some 14 members of staff from Halton Housing joined more than 7,500 runners on Sunday.

Many were tackling a sponsored run for the first time and trained hard to prepare for the challenge.

The money has been donated to Halton Autistic Family Support Group (HAFS) the trust’s charity of the year.

Family-run HAFS helps and supports more than 100 Halton families with autistic children.

Support groups allow parents to share their experiences and a safe environment is provided for youngsters to relax and play.

An advocacy service helps families deal with local and national statutory bodies.

Nick Atkin, trust group chief executive, who took part in the marathon, said: “A huge thank you to everyone who has pledged support to our runners.

“It made all the training and the subsequent miles worthwhile.

“HAFS is a fantastic charity that delivers invaluable support to families across Widnes and Runcorn.”

“Throughout this year we will be working closely with HAFS on a variety of projects which will raise additional funds for the charity.

“We’re improving their website and communication channels as well as raising awareness of the charity's work and services they offer.”

Ciaran Shanahan, HAFS development manager, said:”We were delighted when were informed trust staff were going to do a sponsored run but did not expect it to raise such a fabulous amount.

“This clearly demonstrates the their support and commitment.

“Funds raised will go towards our Christmas programme of activities including a trip to Winter Wonderland, our Christmas party and bowling party.

“Myself, our trustees, children and their families are very grateful for Halton Housing’s wonderful support.”

The trust has donated support worth more than £230,000 to various good causes over the past 12 years.
