A NEW scheme to prevent bereaved families falling into debt as they struggle to meet the rising cost of funerals is set to be approved by Halton Council’s executive board tomorrow.

A Halton ‘residents’ funeral’ could provide a dignified service like any other funeral but at a fixed cost, lower than high street prices.

The average cost of a funeral is currently £3,481 compared to £1,815 in 2005. Costs are expected to continue to rise.

Families, particularly those on low incomes or without savings, find it difficult to meet the unexpected expense.

Halton Council leader Cllr Rob Polhill said: “We know that the death of a relative is a very hard time for people.

“Bereavement often clouds their minds. They want the best for their loved ones even if it means getting into debt.

“We want to give them an option and provide a dignified funeral but one that is very affordable.

“It is unacceptable that a bereaved family trying to come to terms with the loss of a loved one should go through the stress of having to worry about how they can afford to pay for a funeral.”

Neighbouring authorities including St Helens and Wigan already provide a residents’ funeral.

The current cost in Wigan is £1,892 for a cremation and £1,938 for a burial, making them almost 50 per cent cheaper than the average cost.

Last year, 33 burials and 135 cremations were carried out saving residents more than £258,000.

Halton Council plans to go out to tender to find a funeral director willing to provide this new service.

The successful bidder would have to provide an office in the borough if they do not have one here already.

The fixed price would include collection of the deceased from any location in Halton or Warrington or Whiston hospitals, dressing of the deceased and viewing in a chapel of rest.

A suitable oak, or similar finished coffin with handles and an engraved nameplate would be included as well as the funeral director’s professional fees.

The funeral would include a funeral service, cremation at Widnes Crematorium or burial at one of the borough’s cemeteries.

As well as a hearse, the package would also offer one following limousine.

The residents’ funeral would be available to any resident regardless of means.
