A MIDWIFE could be stranded in the USA with her eight-year-old daughter for months after severe storms hit the south of the country.

Whiston Hospital midwife Amy Helmy and daughter Layla, arrived in Texas on Saturday, August 19, while the midwife’s 14-year-old nephew Max has been in the states since July.

The trio had been visiting 33-year-old Amy’s mum Janice Johnson, who moved to San Antonio in July 2009.

But the region has been devastated by Hurricane Harvey, meaning that there will be no flights in or out of the area for the foreseeable future.

It could be weeks or even months before Amy and Max are able to return home.

Jan said: “It’s been horrendous – the storm started on Friday and the rain was torrential for 72 hours, with winds of 50mph.

“The hurricane touched land south of San Antonio in Rockport and Corpus Christi, and destroyed much property.

“The major highways leading into Houston resemble rivers, with the water level about 5ft below the overhead signs.

“Some areas of highway have disappeared into sinkholes.

“The situation remains dangerous, unstable and heart-breaking to see so many people lose everything.

“We are fortunate to not be in that position.”

The family, from Warrington, has issued a plea for help to purchase emergency flights back to the UK.

Jan added: “More than 9,000 flights have been cancelled from George Bush Intercontinental Airport and it remains closed until further notice.

“The only safe and realistic option is to try and find a different route out for them, but with thousands of people in the same situation this is difficult.

“Her original airline will only offer to keep amending the date of travel from Houston, and this could be weeks or months before this likely to happen.

“If we can just get the family back to the UK safely we would be very grateful.

“Donations beyond that amount would be given to the Red Cross to assist in their rescue operations.”
