A WIDNES Vikings fanatic who suffered a devastating stroke at the age of 34 was left ‘made up’ after one of his heroes lent him a helping hand during a charity challenge.

Stuart O’ Brien had a massive stroke when he collapsed at work, a car rental company at Manchester Airport, in September 2013.

He spent nearly three years recovering in hospital and rehabilitation centres before returning to his home in Warrington in November last year.

Last weekend, the 38-year-old took part in the Step out for Stroke Walk at the Halliwell Jones Stadium in Warrington to raise awareness and funds for the Stroke Association.

The Widnes Vikings fanatic was pushed round the pitch in his wheelchair by Chemics centre Chris Bridge.

Stuart’s mum Janet said: “It was a good day and it was good to meet other people in a similar situation to us, and to listen to how they’re managing.

“Stuart is well into his rugby and when he first came home a couple of the players came to see him in February, and he was made up.

“Chris was chatting to him about the walk and good enough he arranged to be there to push Stuart round.

“A few of Stuart’s mates who also support Widnes came down to support him, although they were a bit loathed when they were walking in to Warrington’s stadium.

“We really appreciate what the Stroke Association has done for us.”
